Great Hammerhead Diving

Great Hammerheads

A wonder of nature that are unique and absolutely amazing to see in real life. Great Hammerheads are usually an elusive and rare shark, but for us in the Bahamas they are a regular shark that joins our shark diving adventure. They are spectacular to see with their unusual heads and large dorsal fins. They appear mostly in the fall and winter, October through May when we run our exclusive Tiger and Hammerhead shark trips to feed these large top predators.

Over the many years of operation the Dolphin Dream Team has been searching for and trying to acclimate Hammerheads to divers. Dolphin Dream Team had a location North of Tiger Beach area that was promising with the occasional Great Hammerhead coming in to visit the scuba divers and slowly begin to take food from our shark feeders. The Dolphin Dream Team found that live bait attracted them the best!

Bimini started a few years later and became the premier location for Hammerhead shark diving, the local researchers had been seeing them for years. Now Bimini has changed and there are not as many Great Hammerheads there. Seems there are annual changes that happen with the Great Hammerhead population. Now we are lucky enough to have a resident Great Hammerhead to scuba dive with in the Tiger Beach area. She is more regular and more friendly than the Hammerheads of Bimini.

Great hammerhead sharks, recognized by their hammer-shaped head and tall, pointed dorsal fin, reach lengths of 20-feet, but most individuals encountered by divers are between 10 and 14-feet in length. Feeding primarily at dusk, great hammerheads are considered a fierce predator.

It is important to remember that sharks are wild animals, and complete control of the encounters. Although The Dream Team manages a high success rate, we cannot guarantee shark encounters. Shark expeditions require patience and flexibility. Weather can change the destination of the M/V . Dolphin Dream.
